The Start of Me and You-Emery Lord

Good Day or Evening Bibliophiles. . .depending on where you are in the world.

Today i'll be talking about The Start of Me and You by Emery Lord, I've had this book for a month! I started reading it about a month ago, then found the Jodi Picoult-Small Great Things and kind of had to put it down. . .I explained in a previous post that this is a bad habit I have.

Any way lets start with the blurb shall we. . .

CAN YOU PLAN HAPPINESS?

It's been a year since Paige's first boyfriend died in a swimming accident and its time she rejoined the real world.

So she makes a plan
1. Date a boy (long-standing crush Ryan Chase seems like the perfect choice)
2.Attend parties (with best friends by your side: doable
3.Join a club (simple enough, right
4.Travel (Might as well dream big
5.Swim

But when she meets Ryan's sweet (but so nerdy) cousin, Max, he opens up her world and Paige's plans start to change. . .

Is it too late or a second chance at life

So when I finally finished my previous read, I got through this book quite quickly. It has quite a few quotes that I absolutely loved and the theme of new beginnings and pushing through tough times, recreating who you are after a tragedy made it quite the read. The characters include Paige, Ryan Chase, Max, Tessa, Kayleigh, Morgan and Paige's sweet granny. There is little mention of Paige's boyfriend that died in a drowning accident. I loved that this book wasn't too long after the Jodi Picoult novel and it has also served as a bit of a pick me up lately since of the contents of my current read "Semicolon- Your Story Isn't Over" is a little heavy.
What did we love about this book?
I would definitely have to say the theme of recreating or finding oneself after a tragedy. I haven't read many young adult novels that do this really well. Oh and when Max call's Paige "Janie", Pride and Prejudice reference. . .read this book to find out more.

What did we not we love?
Ummmmm I guess when Paige finally realizes who she's really in love with (not giving any names, I WILL NOT SPOIL THIS FOR YOU). I honestly feel like I waited and waited for the moment to be magical. . .hey at least 5 pages or a whole chapter but to my disappointment it felt like one page worth. What follows are a couple of emails between the two love birds that I skimmed through, its not what I expected really. I guess I could also say the ages of these characters made it a little hard to connect, Paige is 16. . .Its weird to think of a 16 year old knowing anything about being in love. I think I enjoyed the book more for the two themes I mentioned earlier.

Quotes
“Darkness might keep flooding in, but I finally had just enough light to find the way back to myself.”

“In friendship we are all debtors. We all owe each other for a thousand small kindnesses, for little moments of grace in the chaos.”

“Like you had been drowning, and the book was air.”

“In books, sometimes the foreshadowing is so obvious that you know what’s going to happen. But knowing what happens isn’t the same as knowing how it happens. Getting there is the best part.”

Novels in Verse hmmm? "We Come Apart"-Brian Conaghan and Sarah Crossan

Hello fellow book lovers!  So this week I came across my first Novel In Verse! Titled: "We Come Apart" Written by Brian Conaghan and Sarah Crossan . I wont lie to you,  for the mere fact that it was the first time that I had ever read a novel with this structure,  it took me a day or two to get into the book. However, I quickly fell in-love with the characters, the story and the structure. The book is split into three parts and as mentioned the structure is in verse.  We come apart has two main characters, Nicu who has emigrated from Romania, and is awaiting to be married without his consent. The second main character is Jess who comes from a home plagued with domestic violence, her mother is dating a man named Terry who is abusive in many different ways, and he often goes to the extent of making Jess film the abuse. Jess and Nicu have their daily struggles which bring them together and which also stand to separate them.  What I lo...

First post cant be less than "Everything Everything"

Everything Everthing -Nicola Yoon   “Sometimes I reread my favorite books from back to front. I start with the last chapter and read backward until I get to the beginning. When you read this way, characters go from hope to despair, from self-knowledge to doubt. In love stories, couples start out as lovers and end as strangers. Coming-of-age books become stories of losing your way. Your favorite characters come back to life.” ― Nicola Yoon , Everything, Everything This amazing book was referred to me by a friend and colleague,  and I must add that I did not need much convincing after watching a snippet of the trailer of the movie that cannot come soon enough. this book only took me a day to read because of its structure, its super reader friendly and really grabs your heart and doesn't let you go.  Without giving any of the goodness away, this young adult fiction novel looks at the life of Madeline "Maddy" Whittier who suffers from a...

A must read biography "Trapped-Sam Scarborough"

Trapped-Sam Scarborough image by Noluthando Trapped-Sam Scarborough A Strong Woman's Triumph over Abuse How do you know when you are being verbally and emotionally  abused?  The scary truth is somewhere in the world someone is asking themselves this question. South African Sam Scarborough found herself in this predicament whereby she found love, moved across the world with her daughter based on her trust of the man she fell inlove with. However after arriving in London everything seemed to change, his behavior, lies and then the verbal and emotional abuse . The author could not believe her counter parts sudden change in behavior, even goes far to say that she thought she was imagining it all, so she decided to start documenting the abuse. This is a gripping biography follows the experiences and emotions that the author endured during her time in London. It is extremely gripping, I finished it in a matter of three days. Not many authors can make you feel their pain, co...
